And now it’s time for something completely different. A one off composter from Exaco Trading. We bring you the Aerobin 400 Insulated Composter and Self Aeration System! It’s a long name for a compost bin, so what is it all about?
Right then, a little like the Earthmaker Composter, Exaco have given us something completely unique within the world of garden composters. Again, they have introduced a continual cycle composter which makes it perfect for those with small backyards as there is never a need to own more than one bin.
Where there older Earthmaker gave us movable panels that split the compost into layers of different particle size, the Aerobin gives us a truly aerated composter with its internal lung system. Maintaining air flow right into the heart of the organic waste keeps all the microbes that actually do the composting for us happy and healthy. The end result is a bin that will produce its first batch of garden compost within three months. From then on its a continuous cycle of adding new material at the top and collecting finished compost from the bottom.
Backyard Composter & Compost Tea Collector
The Aerobin is perhaps a perfect backyard composter. With its solid base it is best situated on a hard surface to ensure it keeps its stability. Right at the bottom is a compost tea collector so you don’t waste any valuable nutrients from all the material added to the bin.
To use the valuable liquid feed that is compost tea, simply drain it off every now and again via the spigot, and dilute with 20 parts water. It then makes a great feed for lawns, garden plants and food crops. You will even find it useful as a foliar feed for certain plants, though of course not edible leaves please!
Because composting carried out at higher temperatures destroys more pathogens it makes for safer compost with less chance of any viable weed seeds left at the end of the process. The Aerobin is double walled to provide insulation for the goodies inside to help heat the whole process up quickly.
The really clever bit is the internal lung that gets oxygen rich air down into the very heart of the composting material. This helps ensure the process remains hot and fast acting on all new wasted added.
You don’t have to make compost in a hot bin, but it is quicker, leads to safer weed-free compost and is better for the environment as carbon monoxide is not released as it is in a cold slow heap. Having compost created at high temperatures ensures that one vertical system like this can be continually providing the finished resource as well as still having space in the top for more waste.
Exaco Trading Aerobin 400
A solid based large 115 gallon composter that is ideally suited to urban backyard composting. A heavy duty insulated lid, insulated walls and internal aeration system, along with a compost tea reservoir should ensure your compost matures quickly and neatly. Side access doors allow for monitoring of the compost’s development and vents allow air in around the outsides of the waste material.
This is not a cheap composter. But, as you will only need one bin due to this being a continual cycle system you will be saving in the future and will not have to give over too much of your garden to your composting area.
As with all the Exaco composters the Exaco 123 Gallon Aerobin 400 Insulated and Self Aerating Composter is durable, simple to put together (we love a tool free assembly) and just a little bit unique – perfectly suited for the urban or any small garden. And if 115 gallons of compost isn’t enough for you there are vertical add-ons available that will take this up to 160 gallons which really would make it a beast of a garden composter.Exaco Aerobin 400 Insulated Composter Reviews
